What’s AGLC?
The Australian companion to Legal Citation( AGLC) is a citation style specifically designed to identify legal sources. It doesn’t deal with legal writing style. AGLC is medium neutral, which means it allows for a resource to be cited in a harmonious manner, anyhow of whether it has been published in print or online, in reported or unreported format.
ThisĀ AGLC Referencing companion is a summary of the full AGLC 4th Edition, and deals only with the most largely used sources by law students. The complete interpretation of AGLC4 should be appertained to when it’s unclear how to rightly cite a particular source.
Overview
Proper citation in both academic and legal surrounds serves to rightly and meetly admit applicable sources and authorities. Any time an idea or content from a source is used, it should be conceded in a citation with applicable locators( point references), and frequently also with a bibliography entry.
The main factors of AGLC are;
Citations in the body of the runner, using a catchword( raised) number.
A list of notes at the bottom( bottom) of each runner, for all citations on that runner.
A bibliography at the end of the paper, which provides details of each source mentioned in the textbook, as well as details of other sources consulted when probing for the paper.( A bibliography is voluntary, and is included at the discretion of individual academics.)
How to use AGLC effectively?
Read the general rules( Part 1) which outline the conventions used across all legal sources- also go to the specific source type.
The most specific rule for a source should be used.
Where a source isn’t included in AGLC, acclimatize the closest befitting rule; common sense applies then.
Main Rudiments
Catchword figures with corresponding notes should be used whenever information or ideas from sources are bandied.
Sources similar as legislation, cases, books, journals, reports, journals, interviews, radio, TV and information from the Internet must be conceded in textbook and detailed in notes.
Notes are used to back up an argument as well as to admit a source that has contributed to an argument.
The catchword number should be placed at the end of the portion of textbook to which the corresponding citation refers, and appear after any applicable punctuation( similar as a full stop or a comma).
